Krutrim, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) startup founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder of Ola, has introduced its namesake AI chatbot in public beta. The launch follows Krutrim’s announcement of a $50 million financing at a $1 billion valuation, making it the country’s first startup unicorn in 2024. Matrix Partners India led the funding round, and Krutrim claims to be the first AI unicorn in India.
The chatbot, sharing the same name as the company, was revealed in December as Krutrim’s initial product, powered by its multilingual large language models (LLM), also known as Krutrim.
Bhavish Aggarwal mentioned that this marks the start for Krutrim, stating, “This is a start for us and our first-generation product. Lots more to come, and this will also improve significantly as we build on this base. While some hallucinations will be there but much lower for Indian contexts than other global platforms. And we will be working overtime to find and fix!” in a post on X.
Krutrim’s AI models, introduced in December, can comprehend over 20 Indian languages and generate text in 10 Indian languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Marathi. An advanced version, Krutrim Pro, is expected to be available in Q4 FY24.
Bhavish Aggarwal expressed the company’s plans, stating, “Krutrim marks the dawn of a new era in the AI computing stack for our nation. We will aim to innovate alongside the world and define future paradigms.”
Aggarwal adds, “We’ve rooted Krutrim strongly into Indian values and data with over 10+ Indian languages and ready to assist in English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati and even Hinglish!”
Krutrim and Krutrim Pro
Krutrim, meaning ‘artificial’ in Sanskrit, will be available in two sizes: a base model named ‘Krutrim’, trained on 2 trillion tokens and unique datasets, and a more intricate model called ‘Krutrim Pro’, set to launch next quarter. Krutrim Pro, a multimodal system, is designed to understand and work with various formats simultaneously, including text, audio, image, and video, with expanded knowledge and advanced problem-solving capabilities.
Krutrim is also actively working on building AI infrastructure, including indigenous data centres, and has plans to enter server computing, edge computing, and supercomputers. The startup is also exploring the manufacturing of AI-optimised silicon chips.
